Bubbly Brunch Live Auction

Lot 1
The Chairmen’s Choice

Sixteen 750ml bottles of Second Act Napa Valley Red Wine, four each of vintages 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The wine was blended and bottled by a collective led by United Way of Miami-Dade chairman Carlos Migoya and immediate past chairman Mike Farra

We’re kicking off our first VeritageMiami event of 2019 with a salute to our chairmen – current United Way of Miami-Dade chair Carlos Migoya and immediate past chair Mike Farra. They are both well known as wine connoisseurs and wine collectors, and now they are wine makers as well, working with a group of friends also well known to the VeritageMiami audience: Maria and Sergio Gonzalez-Arias and Susan and Mark Bloom. In this auction lot, the group shares their treasured project called Second Act.

Second Act is, we believe, a soon-to-be cult Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon that was personally selected and custom blended by Mike, Carlos, Mark and Sergio. Only one barrel

(288 bottles) of Second Act was produced for its debut vintage in 2013, and equally small (shall we say boutique or even cult?) quantities have followed in the succeeding vintages. Here, you have a chance to sample all four vintages released so far – each member of the consortium is donating a mini-vertical, so you end up with four precious bottles of each vintage – a substantial portion of the world’s supply! An excellent wine (already lovely to drink with many years ahead) and a strong commitment to United Way of Miami-Dade: how can you not raise your paddle and show your support for Miami’s newest winemakers?!

Lot 2
Effervescent Elegance

One 750ml bottle each of 12 prestige cuvée Champagnes: Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2006, Krug Vintage 2003, Taittinger Blanc de Blanc 2007, Piper-Heidsieck Rare 2002, Dom Pérignon 2009, Jacques Selosse Brut 2003, Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque 2011, Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle 2008, Grongnet Special Club 2009, Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2008, Louis Roederer Cristal 2009, and Pommery Cuvée Louis 2004

The concept of a “prestige cuvée” or luxury blend of Champagne was born with the debut of Champagne Dom Pérignon in 1936. That debut release was of the 1921 vintage, and it took some time for the concept to catch on, but since the 1960s, nearly every major Champagne house has crafted a luxury cuvée. In this superb auction lot, you have a collection of many of the greatest prestige cuvées, the wines that set the standard for their respective houses and, by extension, set the standard for what Champagne can and should be.

Each of these prestige cuvées crystalizes the attributes a house most prizes in itself, from the richness of the wines from Pol Roger (named after Sir Winston Churchill, one of the marque’s most vocal supporters) and Krug to the mature lightness and elegance of Pommery Cuvée Louis. Some of the tête de cuvées (literally, the “top of the head,” the best of the best) emphasize the purity of the chardonnay grape (paradoxically, the longest lived of the three major grapes in Champagne) such as Grongnet’s Special Club and the11-year-old Taittinger Comte de Champagne. The oldest wines here are Piper-Heidsieck’s incomparable Rare 2002 and exemplars of the unusual 2003 vintage from Krug and cult grower-producer Jacques Selosse. Even the youngest of this group is a full nine years old, so you have an exceptional collection offering age and the sort of effervescent finesse only the greatest wines of Champagnes can provide.

In short, each of these wines has a distinctive personality and yet, each wine has a shared purpose: to be a star, the very best expression of what a great Champagne house can achieve. Raise your paddle high, and you too will come out at the top of the cuvée, and will echo Dom Pérignon’s legendary statement, “I am drinking stars!”

Lot 3
An Excursion in España

A wine-lover’s trip to Spain for two with round-trip air travel from Miami to Madrid or Barcelona on American Airlines. Trip includes tours and tastings at some of Northern Spain’s most iconic properties and three storied wine regions, including Vega Sicilia in Ribera del Duero, Bodega Numanthia in Toro and López de Heredia in Rioja, with lunch with a López de Heredia family member and two-nights lodging at the five-star Hotel Marques de Riscal in Elciego

You can think of this lot as getting a new look at the Old World with visits to Spain’s first DOCa region, Rioja, and one of its newest arrivals, at least in terms of international awareness, Toro.

Rioja doesn’t get any more classical, nor any more lauded, than at López de Heredia where the tempranillo grape reaches magnificent heights with gentle, patient aging to a time honored, classic way. The white wines here are also icons of style and, like the reds, generally considered among the very greatest wines produced in Spain today. You’ll have plenty of time to discuss the unique aspects of these wines at lunch with a member of the López de Heredia family that has owned the winery for nearly 150 years. In addition you can explore Rioja at your leisure since you have two-nights lodging at the five-star Hotel Marques de Riscal in Elciego to serve as your base.

In Ribera del Duero, tempranillo is also the main grape, but for more than a hundred years, cabernet sauvignon has been included as well in the wines of Vega Sicilia. Usually, the top wine, Unico, includes about 20 percent cabernet along with tempranillo and then the blend is aged for at least a decade before release. In a leisurely visit to this hallowed winery, you’ll have a chance to taste several vintages of Unico as well as the winery’s other bottling, Valbuena.

And in Toro, Numanthia is something of an upstart, a relatively new winery that burst on the international scene and brought enormous interest to the region less than two decades ago. Founded in 1998, and releasing its first wines a few years later, Numanthia captivated lovers of Spanish wine with its assertive bottlings. Yet, while Bodega Numanthia is young, the wines of Toro have been respected for centuries and were, in fact, the first Spanish wines to reach the New World, traveling to our area with Christopher Columbus.

The wines of Numanthia (there are three – Numanthia, Termanthia and Termes) are all treasured by collectors, and you’ll have an exceptional opportunity to taste them in situ when you visit this beautifully modern property in an ancient part of Spain. Of course, to do this, you must be the winning bidder on this exciting lot!

Lot 4
First Times Three

Three 750ml bottles of 1996 Château Latour, Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux

For more than 150 years, those four wines classified in 1855 as “First Growths” have been not only the benchmark for Bordeaux but for red wine in general. From shortly after the classification, there was a ruckus created by the omission of Mouton-Rothschild from that illustrious uppermost level, an omission finally rectified in 1973. Today, there are only five red wines considered the “Greatest of the Great,” year after year the finest wine produced in Bordeaux – they have stood the test of time for more than 150 years.

Of the five “First Growths,” three (Lafite, Latour and Mouton) are in the commune of Pauillac where the combination of soil, proximity to the Gironde River and that mysterious confluence of influences called terroir create a perfect site for cabernet sauvignon. Of these three wines, Lafite is often cited as the most elegant, with Latour praised for its power and Mouton admired as a combination of both qualities. This is just the lot for a power-loving Bordeaux fan.

For more than a century, Château Latour has called itself on the label “Grand Vin de Latour,” and in this vintage, there has been no disagreement about the wine’s greatness. American writer Stephen Tanzer called the 1996 “a great Latour” and Robert Parker awarded it 99 points, citing its uncanny combination of depth of color and kaleidoscopic range of flavors. At 22 years of age (and with impeccable provenance), this splendid wine is still quite youthful to the eye and nose. It’s just easing into a niche of comfortable drinkability, a place it will remain for at least another decade, which means you have plenty of time to savor each bottle, providing of course you are the fortunate high bidder.

Lot 5
A Grand Vin Bordeaux Bonanza

Four days and three nights for two in Bordeaux with round-trip air travel from Miami to Paris on American Airlines. Trip includes three-nights lodging in the city of Bordeaux plus tour, tasting and lunch in a different part of Bordeaux each day:

  • Day 1: south of the city with visits to Château d’Yquem in Sauternes and a tour, and tasting and lunch in Graves Pessac-Léognan at Château Haut-Bailly. You also have the option of adding (or substituting) a tour, tasting and lunch at Château Fargues in Sauternes
  • Day 2: in Saint-Émilion on the right bank with a tour and tasting at Château Cheval Blanc and a tour and tasting at Château La Dominique
  • Day 3: north of the city in the Médoc with tours and tastings at Châteaux Palmer and Margaux in the commune of Margaux and Château Cos d’Estournel in St. Estèphe, plus a tasting and lunch with the winemaker of Pauillac Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande

The French have a saying that you don’t really understand a wine until your feet have been where the vine plants its feet. In other words, you have to see the vineyard to fully experience a wine. Bordeaux is the largest quality wine region in France and, to many, it is the wine capital of the world. With this incredible auction lot, you have a chance to get a dazzling inside look at some of the best wines produced in Bordeaux – to firmly put your feet alongside the vines’ feet.

You’ll fly to Paris, from where you can make your way to Bordeaux (it’s just three hours southwest by the fast train). Once there, set up your base at Bordeaux’ famed Hotel Le Burdigala (or a comparable four-star property depending on availability when you choose to go – we will make the booking for you) and get ready to set out exploring. The great subregions of Bordeaux ring the city, and we’ve arranged for extraordinary tasting experiences at many of the area’s top properties in three different wine-producing areas.

To the south of the city, spend a day exploring Graves and Sauternes with a few of the greatest properties in all Bordeaux: you are set with a tour and tasting at the finest of all Sauterne producers, Château d’Yquem, then head to Graves where you will have lunch at Château Haut-Bailly with winery manager Véronique Sanders. Or, you can add, or substitute a tour, tasting and lunch at Château Fargues.

Another day (you can arrange your days in whatever order you wish), head north to the Médoc and visit another of those exalted First Growths, Château Margaux. Nearby, Château Palmer is ready to host you for a tasting before you head a short distance north to Pauillac and Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, where winemaker and manager Nicholas Glumineau will be your host for lunch and a tasting. Then, you’re off a few miles further north to the commune of Saint-Estèphe and the “Super Second Growth” Château Cos d’Estournel.

The third day of your trip is spent in the Right Bank commune of Saint-Émilion. Here, with one of the most beautifully preserved medieval towns in France at its center, you’ll visit two outstanding properties: the greatest property in the commune, Château Cheval Blanc, and its neighbor Château La Dominique, each of which will offer you a tour and tasting in the cellar.

This is a lot of wine for three days, so we certainly understand if you opt to tack on a couple of days to your adventure – you can arrange the winery tours (all of which are for four people, in case you want to bring friends) in any order you like. All this is yours, as long as you are the high bidder on this Bordeaux Bonanza!

CONDITIONS

Valid for one year from date of auction. Package does not include any ground transportation. Winner is responsible for booking the trip and for any taxes, fees and gratuities. All elements of this package are subject to availability. The hotel booking is for a standard room at a four-star property, the exact property depending on availability when you choose to go. Advance reservations at the chateaux are required. Round-trip air travel from Miami to Paris is provided by 440,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles (equivalent to two round-trip business air travel to Europe during nonpeak season and may vary by schedule as determined by American Airlines) and does not include air travel within Europe. There’s a (Jeremy) Ford In Your Future

A seven-course dinner extravaganza for 14 lucky guests prepared by Stubborn Seed chefs Jeremy Ford and Dallas Wynne in the home of Miami philanthropist and wine collector Stephen Bittel, paired with wines from Bittel’s collection, curated by VeritageMiami founder Michael Bittel (yes, they are related). The seats will be offered individually in a Dutch Auction

When Jeremy Ford won season 13 of Top Chef, the most popular food program on television, Miami culinarians were overjoyed. Ford, then chef of the famous Matador Room and protegé of superstar chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, suddenly leaped from local food star to international celebrity. Ford was our celebrity chef at the 2017 VeritageMiami Interactive Dinner, and shortly after, announced he would open his own restaurant. But rather than moving to New York or LA, he opted to keep his singular culinary vision here in South Florida. The result of that vision is Stubborn Seed in Miami Beach, and within days of its opening in 2018, it was the most acclaimed new restaurant in town.

Ford’s vision for Stubborn Seed focuses on sustainable ingredients and a strong sense of local products, which ties in to his strong urge to support local programs through United Way of Miami-Dade. We are thrilled to welcome Jeremy back with this exceptional auction lot that also includes his dazzling pastry chef Dallas Wynne. Together, they plan to craft an exceptional seven-course dinner in this luxurious private home to accompany equally exceptional wines from the collection of Stephen Bittel. The wines are all carefully selected by Stephen’s brother Michael, one of the founders of VeritageMiami. Stars align in this amazing meal – two great chefs, a stunning collection of wine and a strong desire to support United Way of Miami-Dade. To have your support counted (and to have a dinner and wine pairing you’ll never forget), stand up, raise your paddle, and keep it up until you are one of only14 diners left standing.

CONDITIONS

Dinner will be held on a date to be announced at the Bubbly Brunch.

Lot 8
Vérité at Veritage

An exceptional collection of bottles from Sonoma winery Vérité: a 3-bottle horizontal featuring one each of 2005 Vérité Le Désir, Vérité La Joie, and Vérité La Muse; a 3-bottle horizontal featuring one magnum (1.5 liters) each of 2012 Vérité Le Désir, Vérité La Joie, and Vérité La Muse; and one three-liter bottle of 2010 Verité La Muse.

Vérité is one of the most remarkable wineries in Sonoma County, created by the innovative California winery owner Jess Jackson and the acclaimed French vigneron Pierre Seillan.

Seillan and Jackson had the idea of creating in Sonoma the sort of cult winery that has nearly become commonplace in Napa, and they have succeeded beyond expectation. In a recent retrospective Robert Parker gave Vérité’s three wines seven 100-point scores, an unprecedented achievement for a Sonoma winery. Some of those are in this extraordinary compilation of standard bottles, magnums and one double-magnum.

Vérité’s three wines are La Muse (Inspiration), a supple, beautifully balanced Merlot inspired by Pierre Seillan’s work in Pomerol; La Joie (Joy), a Sonoma County cabernet sauvignon, with world-class depth and power, reminiscent of Pauillac; and Le Désire (Desire), a plush, exotic cabernet franc that expresses the terroir of Sonoma while honoring the spirit of Saint-Émilion where Pierre and Monique Seillan also own a Grand Cru property, Château Lassègue.

Since Parker gave the septet of perfect scores, it is nearly impossible to obtain Vérité and even more difficult to find a horizontal tasting that gives one access to all three wines in the same vintage. Here, you have two of these extraordinary horizontals plus an extremely rare double-magnum. Four of the wines earned perfect 100-point scores from Parker, and the aggregate score of all seven wines is 98.5 points! Vérité is French for “truth,” and in truth, this is the very best of Sonoma in a single lot, and it will go to a single winning bid. This is not a time for timidity – time to go big for big bottles!

San Francisco and Napa-Sonoma Boutiques

In Sonoma, there is a tour and tasting at Adobe Road Winery in Petaluma, and a Champagne and caviar pairing and portfolio tasting at boutique producer Vérité. Start by flying to San Francisco where you’ll spend two nights at the InterContinental San Francisco, just a short 90-minute drive away from Napa and Sonoma.

In Sonoma, you’ll get a good overview of the current scene at Petaluma’s Adobe Road Winery. This boutique property, famous for its limited production and excellent quality, makes wine from both Sonoma and Napa. Then, head to cult producer Vérité for a spectacular Champagne and caviar tasting followed by an opportunity to taste through the three wines for which this property continues to garner 100 point scores: La Muse, Le Desire and La Joie.

The next day you are off to Napa to a private tasting at Lokoya, a winery not generally open to the public. Lokoya focuses on mountain fruit from four of Napa’s best sites, and you’ll taste them all in this unique guided tasting experience.

To put your tastings into perspective, this lot also includes an autographed copy of the comprehensive book, Napa Valley Then and Now by Kelli White, an in-depth survey of the wines and people who made and continue to make Napa Valley a unique place for wine lovers everywhere.
