Jose Hernandez started Tio Colo in 2008, naming the store after his Cuban uncle Colo who loved ice cream sandwiches. The star on their menu is Tio Colo’s “Bocaditos de Helado” – and are more than your typical ice cream sandwiches. These “bocaditos” are made with Cuban-fan favorites like guayaba, mamey, mango, dulce de leche, mantecado, and their newest flavor, guayaba y queso crema – nestled between sugar-coated sponge cake made from Hernandez mother’s family recipe. The business has now expanded to include pizzas, with none other than with guava sauce.
